All I need is a little buzz

McDonald’s is giving away free medium iced coffees on Mondays in August. They’re not great, but they’re not bad, either. I’m scared of the white powder they use for sweetner/milk-like substance.

I ran out of my supply of Northwest Coffee a month or so ago, and Starbucks, by comparison, is like drinking tar mixed with battery acid. Because my trips to St. Louis have been curtailed due to, you know, working and stuff, I’ve tried various other supermarket brands that I’d previously scoffed at, just to try to find something to tide me over.

First it was Chock Full O’ Nuts, which purports to be New York’s favorite coffee since 1935, to which I call shenanigans. No flavor, no caffeine, no nothing.

Then I tried Dunkin’ Donuts ground coffee, which showed marked improvement over Chock Full O’ Nuts, but still not agreeable to either my palate or my stomach.

I think Café Bustelo is on deck once the DD runs out, or perhaps Eight O’Clock Coffee. White Castle has coffee in retail, but I fear the gastrointestinal ramifications provided by other White Castle products.

Indianapolis has a small chain called Hubbard & Cravens, where they roast their own beans and charge upwards of $15 a pound for nearly everything. Someone forgot to tell them that “medium tan” isn’t the color for a proper roast. It’s barely drinkable swill, but the cafés are nice and they have free wireless access.

What does it take to get a decent cup of coffee in this town? A four-hour drive to Northwest Coffee, that’s what. I’ve heard great things about Intelligentsia in Chicago, and I could always mail-order Peet’s, but I feel like I’m missing something here.

trader joes, fair trade, shade grown ethiopian … get the whole beans, grind yourself. maybe they suck, i don’t know, but i agree with what you wrote above, and for ~$6 a pop, it’s not too pricey either.
